Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE)
Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) is widely used in the chemical processing, automotive, and aerospace industries. TFE is a unique combination of chemical, heat, and electrical resistance. Chemically, TFE resists acids, steam, amine-based corrosion inhibitors, hydraulic fluids, alcohol, and petroleum fluids. TFE typically retains its remarkable chemical resistance even in high temperatures. The temperature can be up to 450° F / 232° C. It has many advantages. First, it improves the low temperature properties of the materials. Second, it also improves the materials’ resistance to swelling in hydrocarbon oils, though this improvement comes at the expense of base resistance. We also continue to develop new compounds in response to the ever-changing needs of industry. For example, automotive power train applications are making greater and greater demands on seal compounds. Increasingly aggressive lubricants and higher temperatures are testing the limits of even the best materials.
FEP performs well in numerous acids, amines (anti-freeze), brake fluids, petroleum fluids, phosphate esters and steam. It does not perform well in acetic acid, ethers, and toluene. FEP undergoes substantial swell after immersion in solvents like acetone, and chloroform.
